Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic

Job Summary


The Southern Stone Company is looking to add a Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic to the team that will be responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing heavy construction and material handling equipment in the field. This role supports uptime and reliability of mobile and stationary equipment used in construction, marine, and industrial operations. The mechanic must have strong experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems. This position requires travel with base of operations located in Jackson, MO and will report to the Equipment Service Manager.


Job Responsibilities including but not limited to

· Perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs on heavy equipment, including:

o Excavators, loaders, dozers, and graders

o Material handlers, cranes, and forklifts

o On-road and off-road diesel equipment

o Support equipment such as generators and pumps

· Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic system failures

· Conduct preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company standards

· Inspect equipment for safety, operational readiness, and compliance

· Maintain accurate service reports, maintenance logs, and work orders

· Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies

· Respond to field breakdowns and perform on-site repairs to minimize downtime

· Assist with equipment mobilization and demobilization between job sites

· Communicate with operations and equipment management teams regarding equipment status and repair needs

· Order, track, and manage parts, tools, and consumables

· Safely operate service trucks, forklifts, hoists, and shop equipment


Job Qualifications and Requirements

· High school diploma or GED (technical school or certification preferred)

· Minimum 3–5 years of heavy equipment or diesel mechanic experience (field experience preferred)

· Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical diagnostics, and powertrain components

· Ability to read and interpret schematics, manuals, and diagnostic software

· Knowledge of industry standards, MSHA safety regulations, and best practices for equipment servicing.

· Strong communication skills for coordinating across departments and with external vendors.

· Willingness to travel and work extended hours, including weekends and emergency call-outs

· Ability to lift heavy components and work in outdoor and industrial environments

· Must have a valid drivers license and acceptable driving record. CDL preferred.

· Must pass a background check and drug test.

· Ability to stand, walk, and be on your feet for extended periods of time to move around uneven surfaces.

· Required to climb on and off equipment which may include pushing, pulling and different body positioning.

· Perform work in different and extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, dust and more.

· Will be exposed to loud and moving mechanical parts and heavy machinery noise.

· Must wear required PPE and other safety gear.
